1. Increased referral choice for Anti-VEGF (previously referred to as the Wet AMD service)
Coventry and Warwickshire CCGs have recently completed a successful tender for Anti-VEGF (previously referred to as the Wet AMD service) services with 3 existing and 3 new providers delivering the service from July onwards. The existing providers continuing to deliver the service are:

New Medical Systems Limited (t/a Newmedica), primarily but not limited to covering North Warwickshire, South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust, primarily but not limited to covering South Warwickshire, University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire NHS Trust, primarily but not limited to covering Coventry and Rugby.

The 3 new providers are:

SpaMedica Limited who will be delivering services based at Coventry from 3rd August 2020
Community Health & Eye Care Limited who will be delivering services from a number of sites covering Coventry and Warwickshire via a mobile unit and expected to commence delivery of the service from 1st September 2020
George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust who are based in Nuneaton and the start date for commencement has yet to be confirmed
All providers will be available on e-referral to offer patients more providers and location of services to receive treatment. New patients are to be seen within 10 working days to ensure they are diagnosed and treated urgently for conditions.

2. PHE Alert - Evidence of harm from illicit or fake benzodiazepines
An alert has been issued by PHE to alert advises of the availability of, and harm from, illicit drugs sold as benzodiazepines particularly when used in conjunction with alcohol and drugs with a respiratory depressant effect including gabapentinoids and opioids. Guidance which outlines risks and advice for professionals is available here

3. Restarting of Holbrooks Health Team Ultrasound Services in August - change of referral route
The range of examinations is unchanged and the referral route is via e-RS, please. The referral form can be downloaded from GP Gateway. The service provision has been redesigned in order to comply with social distancing rules, protective equipment requirements, disinfection and cleaning procedures. The requirement for a transvaginal scan will be assessed by the sonographer during the pelvic transabdominal scan and the transvaginal scan may need to be rescheduled.

A letter from the service can be found here and a patient information leaflet can be downloaded here

4. Thoracic surgery at UHB moved to Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QE) site
Thoracic surgery has historically been based on the Heartlands site only. Due to a cessation of elective operating due to the COVID-19 situation, a limited Thoracic surgical programme is currently operating out of the Priory Hospital. UHB have designated the QE site for complex cold surgery; and in view of the private sector provision being likely to cease, it has been agreed to move the Thoracic service to the QE site as of 20th July 2020, to sit alongside Cardiac Surgery, as recommended in external reviews.

5. Suffocation risk of face masks attached to baby's dummies
In some parts of the country there have been warnings issued as face masks attached to baby's dummies were found to be being used. While there is some uncertainty about whether if this is an issue locally, we have been asked by Safeguarding to make you aware of this and it is something to be aware of.
